It all started in 2003 when a couple of local athletes couldn’t find a gym in Washington, DC that fit their workout needs, and so they started an outdoor BootCamp. Before long, they had a core group of BootCampers — former athletes, weekend warriors, moms getting back into shape, and first-time fitness goers — allowing them to move into a permanent space, the gymnasium in the back of a church. From there, Balance Gym grew to several locations, while always sticking to its roots as a people-centric community gym.
Around the same time as Balance Gym opened, CrossFit was beginning to grow, emphasizing the aim “to forge a broad, general and inclusive fitness” and defining itself as “constantly varied functional movements performed at relatively high intensity.” Seeing as Balance Gym’s focus has always been on people and on functional training instead of machines, CrossFit seemed like a perfect fit! Which is why in 2009, Balance Gym opened its first CrossFit box, CrossFit Balance.
Together, Balance Gym and CrossFit Balance have proven to Washingtonians that working out doesn’t have to be a chore, and that coming to the gym can be the best part of your day. We always say we’re more than just a gym, we’re a place to hang out, meet friends, find your community and have fun. Our members and staff frequently join together on weekends and after work for hikes up Old Rag, kayaking down the Potomac, biking to the beach, retreats in West Virginia — and even happy hours sprinkled in from time-to-time.
CrossFit Balance Georgetown
When you ask locals to describe the Georgetown neighborhood, you’ll notice it’s hard to pin down a definition. Often you’ll hear about its historic houses, how it’s a great place to shop, or take a date to fantastic restaurant. You’ll hear about its lively waterfront filled with kayakers and paddleboarders, and of course, about its beautiful Georgetown University.
However, you rarely hear anyone mention the residents — the hard-working people who keep this neighborhood thriving, its homes beautiful, and its parks full of life. That’s who we’re here for, those who love their community and who want a locally owned and operated fitness option that emphasizes results and community. A gym where they will meet their neighbors and cheer them on. A gym where they will receive personal attention from experienced coaches who will help them meet their fitness goals with well-structured, comprehensive programming.
CrossFit Balance Georgetown will be located in the 3,000 square-foot former storage space adjacent to the Reebok FitHub Georgetown store, located at 1251 Wisconsin Ave. Right in the heart of the neighborhood.
The question we keep hearing – “Why a crowdfunding campaign?” As a community gym, CrossFit Balance Georgetown wants to get you involved from the very beginning, and of course, offer you some amazing perks for your support! In addition to pursuing traditional forms of raising money, we want ensure that our community continues to play an active role in our growth. Our community is our single greatest asset and our single greatest source of strength, and we want our community and our partners to feel included in Balance every step of the way. Not only are you getting some great perks for your donations, including t-shirts, Reebok headbands and discounts, membership discounts to Crossfit Balance, etc., but your donations are going directly to continue Balance Gym’s mission: to encourage you to push your limits, reach your goals… and grow with us.
Your support will help us fill CrossFit Balance Georgetown with the very best equipment ranging from bumper plates and bars to rings, slam balls, squat stands, and kettlebells. Plus, custom-made pull-up bars and 500 square-feet of athletic turf for sled-pushes and more!
We also plan to make this box feel like home, with decals, signage, and some extra touches on our outdoor back deck (like hammocks!) to create space for members to socialize and hang out before and after workouts.
Thank you for your support and we look forward to welcoming you in our new facility!
